AMA declares war on street hawking.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has declared war on street hawkers in the metropolis. This follows the end of a two-week deadline given to hawkers to
leave the streets of Accra.
Consequently, any hawker found on the streets of Accra today will be arrested by the Assembly's task force. The Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Nuumo Blafo, says the indiscipline of people have made it difficult for the assembly to deal with the situation, but this time round, the assembly will make sure the law takes its course.
He spoke on our Current Affairs Programme, ‘Behind the News’. Numo Blafo also called on the media not to take sides with the hawkers when evicted; but rather, educate them on the need to leave the streets as they infringe on other people's rights in terms of movement.
Meanwhile, some hawkers in Accra seem to have heeded the call by the AMA not to ply their trade on the streets and pavements in the city.
A visit by a team of Radio Ghana reporters revealed that while some hawkers were off the street,
recalcitrant ones were still doing brisk business on some major streets.
